    What Is the Theory Test?

The driving theory test is a two-part computer test you must pass before you can book your practical test. Part one is 50 multiple-choice questions. Part two is a hazard perception test with 14 video clips. You need 43 out of 50 on the multiple choice and 44 out of 75 on hazard perception to pass each section. You must pass both parts in the same sitting.

    Part 1: Multiple Choice Questions

You get 57 minutes to answer 50 questions. The questions cover 14 categories including road signs, speed limits, vehicle handling, and the Highway Code. The pass mark is 43 out of 50. The questions are not designed to trick you — they test whether you know the rules and can apply them.

    • Alertness — concentration, observation, and anticipation
    • Attitude — courtesy, consideration, and environmental awareness
    • Safety and your vehicle — basic maintenance and safety features
    • Safety margins — stopping distances and road conditions
    • Hazard awareness — spotting and responding to hazards
    • Vulnerable road users — cyclists, pedestrians, motorcyclists, and horse riders
    • Other types of vehicle — buses, lorries, and emergency vehicles
    • Vehicle handling — acceleration, braking, and steering
    • Motorway rules — lane discipline, signs, and breakdowns
    • Rules of the road — speed limits, parking, and right of way
    • Road and traffic signs — understanding every sign category
    • Documents — licences, insurance, and MOT
    • Incidents, accidents and emergencies — first aid and reporting
    • Vehicle loading — weight limits, towing, and securing loads

Use the official DVSA theory test app. Every RTS student gets free access to a theory test practice app — ask your instructor for details.

    Part 2: Hazard Perception

Hazard perception is where most people struggle. You watch 14 video clips of everyday driving. Each clip has at least one developing hazard — a situation that would cause you to change speed or direction. One clip has two. You click the mouse when you see a hazard developing. The earlier you click, the more points you score — up to 5 per hazard.

    • Do not click rhythmically or continuously — the system flags this as cheating
    • Click once when you first spot the hazard, then click again as it develops
    • Look for clues: parked cars, pedestrians near the kerb, junctions, and school zones
    • Practice with official clips — the format is different from dashcam footage

    How to Study Effectively

Start studying at least three weeks before your test. Read the Highway Code first — it is the source of every question. Then use a practice app to test yourself on each category. Aim for consistent scores of 45 or above before you book. For hazard perception, practice daily for 15 minutes. Your eyes will start to spot hazards automatically.

Do not just memorise answers. Understand why the answer is correct. The real test uses different wording, so memorisation alone will catch you out.

    On Test Day

Arrive 15 minutes early. Bring your photocard licence. You will be shown to a computer booth. You get a few practice questions before the real test starts — use them to settle your nerves. You can flag questions and return to them later. Take your time. There is no prize for finishing early.

    What Happens If You Fail?

If you fail one part, you fail the whole test. You can retake it after three working days. There is no limit on attempts. Most people who fail do so on hazard perception — so practice that section the most. Your theory certificate is valid for two years, so do not leave your practical test too long after passing.
